Tiger never ceases to amaze! Tiger won his 14th (yes 14th!!!) Major Monday placing him in the "we are not worthy" category of athletes. Not only did he win his 14th, but won in style (91 holes later in the US Open against Rocco Mediate). Mediate proved to be an incredible competitor (with a great story). He almost didn't even make the Open cut...but he survived a sudden death playoff to qualify and almost beat one of the greatest golfers ever!

Tiger played through terrible knee pain (after having knee surgery) and will likely be taking a break for awhile to heal.

Baseball

In other news, after much speculation (in fact, hourly speculation), the Mets finally fired Manager Willie Randolph. The Mets are 34-35 this season (not so great with the highest payroll in 2008 at $138M).  This is no surprise to anyone particularly after the Mets' historic collapse last season. Jerry Manuel will take over as intermim manager.

Watercooler Discussion: Is Tiger Woods the best Golfer to have ever played the Game? Is He one of the greatest athletes ever?

On Father's Day weekend, the Celtics were unable to wrap a championship trophy for their dads.  The Lakers, however, ensured that THEIR dads would get to watch their sons play at least one more finals game this season.  Now the details:

On Thursday night, the Lakers made history -- putting on the best collapse in NBA Finals history.  After dominating the entire half, the Lakers led by 20 POINTS heading into halftime.  It looked like a surefire win for the Lakers, but nobody could have predicted what happened.    Slowly, led by long-time-Celtic Paul Pierce, the Celtics clawed back, and finally took the lead towards the end of the fourth quarter.   And after that, there was no hope for the Lakers.  The Celtics Ray Allen capped off the game with a beautiful, in-yo-face isolation drive against Sasha Vujacic (meaning he called a play in which it would just be him against Sasha... one-on-one.)  It was simultaneously the greatest comeback and pathetic meltdown in Finals history.  Fascinating.  Unbelievable.  Boston 97, Los Angeles 91.

But, on Sunday, with their season on the line, the Lakers jumped out to an early game lead.  However, (and perhaps as predicted) the Celtics came back AGAIN, trailing by only 3 points at the half.  It was neck and neck up until the last 1.5 minutes, when Kobe Bryant stripped the ball from Paul Pierce on a vital possession, and slammed it home in front of his hometown crowd (who went nuts by the way).  The Lakers hung on, and took Game 5, 103-98.  The series heads back to Boston on Tuesday.  How can you not watch this?

In other news, Tiger Woods played brilliantly in the US Open, but it all came down to just one 12-ft-putt.  Nearly impossible for the average golfer (especially in front of a huge crown and millions on the line)... but for Tiger?  Well, he sunk the putt, the crowd erupted, and now he will have a one-on-one 18 hole showdown with Rocco Mediate on Monday (ESPN).  For the common sports spectator, golf is not a viewing option (lack of drama).   But Monday will definitely be a heated contest, and the drama will be in full bloom.

Another historic game in an historic rivalry. The LA Lakers were up by 21 points after the First quarter and  by 24 points by the third quarter. Then, the Boston Celtics rallied for to an incredible comeback to win 97-91 for a 3-1 lead in the series.

The record books show that no team has ever come back from a 3-1 deficit in the Finals, but records can be broken. After all, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Celtics comeback in this game was the largest comeback in the Finals since 1971.

Watercooler Chat Discussion: Does anyone else have a problem with Kobe Bryant's interview after his Laker's loss Thursday night? He said,  "We just wet the bed. A nice big one, too, one of the ones you can't put a towel over. It was terrible. Nothing you can do about it. They played great in the third quarter, we played like crap. They pulled out a great win, now it's time to move on to the next one, period." Then he went on to comment on how the Laker's will bounce back,  "Whine about it tonight, a lot of wine, a lot of beer, a couple shots, maybe like 20 of them, digest it, get back to work tomorrow. Nothing you can do."

Ok, maybe he was kidding about the drinking or making some kind of analogy, but is this really appropriate for an interview that Everyone is watching? I'm not trying to be Pollyanish about this and I know he's a real competitor and he's upset, but please, have some class Kobe!

Triple Crown Upset

The Final Leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, was a tremendous disappointment on Saturday. Big Brown was going for the first triple crown in 3 decades. But, he shockingly pulled up lame, and finished last due to a muddy track or the heat or simply because the Belmont (at a mile and a half) is traditionally a difficult race where odd things can happen. I was at the race and can tell you that I've never seen so much anticipation for a Triple Crown winner. When the race ended with Big Brown clearly out of the money (not in the top three), you felt the energy at the track completely sapped.

NBA Finals: Celtics up by 2

Uh-oh -- after two games of the NBA finals, the Los Angeles Lakers find themselves down 2-0. Many expected this series to got to 7 games, and it still might, but with the Celtics jelling in the first two games, they have to feel pretty confident heading to LA.

Paul Pierce led the way in Game 1, even though he suffered an injury that took him off the court -- completely sucking the life out of Celtic fans. He came back out mid-way through the 2nd half, and went on a scoring tear.

In game 2 Sunday night, it started off a neck-and-neck battle, but the Celtics pulled away in the second half led by one of their bench players -- Leon Powe. The Lakers led a late game resurgence, even pulling within 2, but they didn't have enough to complete the comeback, and fell 108-102.

The Celtics just seem to be one cohesive unit. They've had chemistry all season long, and have been relatively lucky in the injury department. So, come finals time, they know each other's styles thru and thru. Not to take anything away from the Lakers, but their other star player, Pau Gasol, joined the team late in the season. Ever since they traded the #5 pick in the 2007 draft, and picked up Ray Allen, and then landed Kevin Garnett in a monster trade - it just felt like it was the Celtics year. And perhaps it is.

However, this year's playoffs has sung the tune of the HOME TEAM. Teams can't seem to win on the road, and almost always win at home. Therefore, don't think that Kobe is going to go quietly. Throughout the season and playoffs, he has escaped the grasp of his critics -- playing unselfish team ball. But -- it might be time for Kobe to become old, unstoppable Kobe, and just take over the entire game. It might be time for 81 point Kobe.

The first game of this historic rivalry did not disappoint (well, unless you are a Laker fan). The Celtics pulled out a 98-88 win over the Lakers. The most memorable part of the game was seeing the Celtics Paul Pierce bravely walk back on the court after being carried off just minutes earlier due to a knee injury. According to Pierce, he went to the locker room, tried to put a little weight on his knee, realized he could then decided to go back out and finish the game (in style too by hitting a pair of 3 pointers late in the 3rd Quarter).

The Lakers super star (and the best player in the League), Kobe Bryant, looked just average. He's going to need to make more than 9 of his 26 attempts for the Lakers to pull this off.

Game 2 is Sunday at Celtics 9:00 pm.
