1) Fastest Man on Earth! Usain
Bolt won the gold medal in the 200m. He is now the first man since 1979
to hold the 100m and 200m records simultaneously. Bolt set a World
Record in the 200m by winning in 19.3 seconds....and, he didn't slow up
this time. Some are speculating that Bolt slowed up in the 100m because
he already held the world record.
2) Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh did
not lose a single set in 14 consecutive Olympic matches (from Athens to
Beijing) to win their second consecutive gold medal. No one has ever
done that before!
3) Team USA defeated Australia and now faces Argentina in the semifinals. They are really making this basketball competition look pretty easy.
4) U.S. Womens' Volleyball (on the court vs on the beach) defeated Cuba to advance to the gold medal game.
Baseball Update
MLB umpires and management signed an agreement to implement instant replay in the game.
NASCAR Update
Joe Gibbs Racing is in hot water. The powers that be at NASCAR suspended seven members of JGR for attempting to manipulate a horsepower test after a Nationwide Series race last weekend. JGR drivers Tony Stewart and Joey Logano lost 150 driver points and the teams were placed on probabation.

Gymnastics
Shawn Johnson finally won her gold medal in the balance beam event. She was favored to win the gold in the all-around competition but finished second to her friend and roommate Nastia Liukin. She also got a silver as part of the U.S. team that finished behind China in the team final. Before her gold medal winning event she complained of a headache and stomachache but obviously overcame it all and performed stunningly.
U.S. Women's Softball
U.S. women's softball team will compete for its fourth straight gold medal. In fact, the U.S. team has now won 22 Olympic games since the year 2000.
Michael Phelps
Michael Phelps is now officially a "celebrity". In a report from Access Hollywood, Lindsay Lohan wrote a text message to Billy Bush. Here is the exchange:
"It made them all stronger -- which came in handy when Billy showed Mama a text to her son from actress Lindsay Lohan. Billy handed his Blackberry to Mama for her to read Lindsay's message to Michael, and her reaction was priceless."Pardon the language but..." Billy said as he showed her the text.Mama Phelps' usually jubilant face turned horrified. "OK, Lindsay!!! -- Delete! Delete! Delete!"Lindsay's crime? Telling her son he's, 'bleepin' amazing'!
I loved Michael's Mom before and during the Olympics, and now you just can't help but love her even more. Go Debbie!!!!!
And, as a celebrity, Phelps is apparently competition for the ego driven J.Lo After an appearance on "Good Morning America" Aug. 18th, J.Lo was overheard saying that she “couldn’t understand why everyone is talking about that swimmer,” according to a GMA source. “She couldn’t come up with (eight-time gold-medal winner Michael) Phelps’ name, and then she yammered on about how she was the one training for a triathlon just six months after giving birth, and how that was the big story right now, not ‘the swimmer.’ ”

Olympic Update
After beating Japan on Monday, the U.S. Women's Soccer team will play for the gold vs Brazil. The game will be broadcast live at 9 a.m. Eastern Thursday on USA Network.
With their 107th Consecutive win, defending Olympic champions Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor of
the United States will play for a silver or gold medal in the beach
volleyball championship game. For some reason we are really into beach
volleyball this Olympics (hmm....maybe it's because it is on every
night in prime time (or seemingly every time we turn on the TV). That's
ok though...it's been fun to watch....go Misty May!!!!
On a touching note, according the Associated Press, "Just as she did four years ago, May-Treanor sprinkled some of her mother's ashes on the sand before the semifinal, saving another half-portion for a similar ceremony at the gold medal game. "You can't leave home without her," May-Treanor said, tapping the plastic film canister she used to carry Barbara May's remains. "But she'll stay here."
There has been a bit of a controversy over Jamaica's Usain Bolt (the sprinter who set a world record by winning the gold medal in the 100-meter dash). NBC host Bob Costas and track and field commentator Ato Boldon were extremely critical of Bolt for his excessive celebration BEFORE he crossed the finish line.

Olympics Week one is in the books. And it has been a huge hit around the country, with NBC reporting that roughly 30 million tune in every night to watch. This is surprising considering the '04 ratings were sub par. It seems that America has caught Olympic fever. Here are some amazing highlights:
1) Michael Phelps, or as the Chinese have been calling him "America's Super Fish" has done it, . A record-breaking 8 GOLD MEDALS!! However, they didn't come easy. He won two medals by literally fingertips. He was behind in one race the entire way, until a late surge in the end put him in contention to win the race. (Note the word "contention"). It still seemed that his Serbian opponent, Milorad Cavic, was poised to win the race. But at the last 1/100th of a second, he stretched out his fingertips, and with a heavy amount of amazing luck, Phelps' fingers touched the wall before Cavic. Beyond surreal.
2) Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt
shattered the 100m World Record on Saturday, crushing the competition
with a finish time of 9.69 seconds. Keep in mind that this was a guy
who just started running this event 2 months ago. He's a natural, and
now holds the distinguished title of "Fastest Man In The World"
3) In gymnastics, Nastia Lukin
from the United States won the 'All-Around Gold'. This was an event
China was heavily favored to win, so Lukin's victory is both
spectacular and an underdog victory.
4) And in some sad news, Liu Xiang, possibly China's most marquee athlete in these Olympic games, hobbled off the field before his first heat in the 100m race. The whole nation was waiting to see how their hero performed, and now, 4 years in the making, they won't get that chance. And neither will he.
5) Serena and Venus Williams win gold medal in women's doubles tennis
