Football 101: Special Teams

In addition to offensive and defensive team players, a football team also has special teams -- 11 players who have very specific roles at certain key points in the game. No, these players aren't any more "special" than other players on the team, they just have special assignments and are not on the field as long.

Special teams come on to the field for kickoffs, field goal attempts, extra point attempts and punts. They are also called kicking teams and receiving teams. Most special team assignments require quickness and strength. As with all positions in football, players are assigned to roles that match their size, speed and skills.
