Water Cooler Chat: Was it a Touchdown?
I’m not going to give you a play-by-play of the game last night, but I will tell you what everyone will be talking about all day (and perhaps all season): the flag play.
Let’s get caught up: The Miami Dolphins were playing the Pittsburgh Steelers last night on NBC. The game was midway through the fourth quarter (the last 15 minutes). The Steeler's tight end (an offensive player who can receive passes but also is responsible for blocking), Heath Miller, ran all the way down the field and scored a touchdown, the longest run for the team in nine years.

But wait, the replay showed his foot went out of bounds prior to getting into the end zone (the area where the man carrying the ball has to get to in order to score a touchdown).
The Dolphins' head coach threw a red flag (which signals that he wants the officials to review the play) right before the Steelers kicked their extra point (after a touchdown, the scoring team is allowed to try for one extra point by kicking the ball through the goal posts), but the official did not see the flag so the touchdown stood...and essentially that was the end of the game for the Dolphins.
So, now, discuss...

That doesnt seem fair! So It wasnt a legal touchdown? Can't they take it away after reviewing a playback tape! In tennis you are able to challenge the point and they wait to continue the game. Why didnt the Dolphins coach speak up louder! NO WOMAN head coach would let that happen!!!
boo hoo for the Dolphins - there are plenty of calls that seem unfair throughout any season. If the coach was that upset and ereally wanted that play reveiwed he could and should have made a much bigger deal and made certain the officical saw the flag. Come on.....
As an avid Steeler and Heath Miller fan... I agree with Jacki, the Dolphins coach could have made the call before Jeff Reed kicked the extra point. In many of today's papers both in Pittsburgh and nationally it was said that the officials even waited before allowing Reed to kick in case there was going to be a challenge on the play. All throughout the preseason the Steelers have been on the receiving end of crappy calls, so letâs call it even. In the end it didnât matter because the Steelers still won by two touchdowns.
A tight end is a receiver responsible for blocking, but all receivers need to block. I think they are called tight ends because of where they line up. They line up close in to the rest of the offenseive line guys (guards, center, etc.) Other receivers are "wide outs" because they line up farther out.
How about that Wes Welker? Isn't he a cutie? I've decided I'm a full time Miami fan because of him!
Nick Saban should learn a lesson from this as should other coaches. The NFL officiating crew can't stand there and wait for the coach to make a decision.
They (coaches) used to have a buzzer but that was trashed, so the red flag needs to be thrown quickly and if need be the coach needs to go "out of the box" to do that.
It's officially football season when we start the bitching about bad calls! Yes!!
i love this site keep up the good work
This article is great. Helps me have a great conversation about the upcoming season. Great writing and awesome idea to have sports talk related to women!
You would think Dolphins fans would be more upset with their coach then with officiating. He waited entirely too long to throw the flag...and then it was just a small toss to the ground with the officials back turned to him. You snooze, you loose. Yes, it was a "bad call" on the field...which happens and is why review was implimented. And the system works a lot of the time...if your coach knows how to use it.
hands off my wes welker!!! i saw him first! LOL
This was such a great game!!! Go Steelers.
look. it's a game. the call was the call. any review is foolhardy (play the game, really; it's kind of SLOW as it is) and the best thing to do is just weep - o it's sooooooo sad :( it just doesn't make sense :*(. tear! And, wait a minute, it was also legitimate by the rules of the game - the coach failed to throw the flag :*~( (tear with booger). So, let's clarify. The Steelers won, the Dolphins are then losers, Heath Miller prevailed and the Dolphins have to cope with a failure of a coach too (awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww).
