Watercooler Chat: Imus in the Morning in trouble

In case you missed it, the big story of the weekend was Don Imus’ rant on his MSNBC show Thursday morning. Imus described the Rutgers University women’s basketball team as “nappy-headed hos” as a retort to the show’s producer calling the team “hardcore hos”. The women’s team is made up of two white women and eight African-American women. I didn’t listen to the show, but apparently there was even more racist and sexist rants.

I don’t know if Imus is sexist or racist or just wants to “stir things up” and get ratings, but the one thing I can say is he’s not too bright. Why after all these years of having a successful radio/tv program would he jeopardize his career?

So, the big question on all the news shows all weekend and probably all week is “should Imus be fired?” And, should he be fired because he’s racist, sexist or just plain stupid? Any opinions?

Speaking of racist and sexist and someone we all love, Tony Soprano is back. Not that this has much to do with sports (although they did have a storyline involving horses and horse racing last year) but the Sopranos are finally back and fill a much needed void in Sunday nights (now that football season is over).

Imus is always saying something he doesn't mean. I would prefer his comments to the rantings of Al and Jesse.

First, let me begin by say that I am a staunch democrat who believes that anyone who say that they are a republican and proud of it is definitely a turn off. However, I do watch Imus in the morning and they don't give a damn who they offend. Now, don't get me wrong. With regard to the Rutgers basketball team, it was an abomination and very offensive. (Rep. Joe Barton must in must be in his glory behind the uproar of all of this. I don't agree with Imus on most of the thing he say on his program but the one thing I can say is that he is not a racist. The work that he does daily to bring awareness to autism to all children of all nationalities is to be commendable. Oh, did I mention that I am African American that hates the republican ideology in ever aspect of the word. As Imus said "he is a smart person that said a dumb thing." I couldn't agree with him more. Cut the man some slack on this one, and America, don't buy into this because you are only going to inflate it further.

im curious as to why every time a white person says something about a black person its made out to be prime time news for weeks months even, but when a black says something about a white it comes and goes.if any thing is said at all.i guess the point im trying to make is they are no longer the minority.we do not owe them anything.we just keep sitting back and letting it go on because the people that can make a difference wont and the ones that want to cant.so the little guy has to sit back and watch it happen in our face and cant do nothing about it.we dont have white history month,or white entertainment television.what if we had a college fund only for white people, yeah right al sharpton would be all over it,and the riots would destroy america.it is bullshit and getting fuckin sick of it!!!!!fuckem all

i think mr imus does very well for mankind and i also think the comment was made to be funny (and it really should not have been made) but it was taken out of context and it should not have been taken with such sensivity---imus is an ok guy.let him alone for god's sake

betty said:

blacks get with the program quit being so damn sensitive. we really can't help what happened in the past

Eileen Mitchell said:

blacks get with the program, this is just why people are upset. whoever makes remarks that DEMEAN other should be taken to task.
when you are on the air waves everyday it makes a big big difference as to what you say.
everyone has feelings!!!
Imus has a format that has people talking whether he is joking or not.

Eunice said:

Think back to 'Jimmy the Greek'. He certainly was offensive and they were right to get rid of him, but Imus be listed under 'discusting, dispicible, revulting. His charity work should not override what needs to be done. GET RID OF HIM.

to mr fuckem all something a racist would say, u have had white entertainment television for ages eveychannel was white and somewhat still is, there are only a few black accredited colleges in this country while most still remain white i go to community college in indiana and to this day in 2007 still get looks from the staff as well as the students as to what am i doing there and for my last response every month in america is white history month we have one the shortest month as well quite ironically and still we don't get the credit we deserve in this country mrfuckemall !!!!!!!!!!

I have heard black people call each other "nappy Head". If a woman is a "Ho", then what is a man who does the same thing? What is a "double standard", and WHY do we have them?

The Civil War was over years ago and John F. Kennedy made sure black people had the same chance, or a better chance than white people. This has gone on for forty years, long enough to give black people an equal chance.

I think black people should stop trying to heap guilt on white people and we should all try to get along. Instead of having black colleges, black TV stations, and black neighborhoods, if we really want to get along, we would do away with them. What would black people say if we had white colleges, white TV wtations and white neighorhoods? Of course at one time it was that way but THAT WAS A LONG TIME AGO! As long as we gripe and complain about things, we will never heal!

There is just so much guilt a person can bear and then they start to resent the person who trys to heap it on them. Wait and see!

I dont even get the appeal of Imus! I think he is just an idiot and personally he creeps me out.

I think that the very first thing that should be TAUGHT in EVERY school from K through College...is the DEFINITION of "Minority", and "RACISM".

If Africans (NOT 'African Americans') can call each other Nigger, and Ho, then it should NOT be racist for anyone to say it...

Why can't AMERICANS, have a NAACaucasionP, or a Miss "Other Than Black" America Contest, or a National "White" Caucus.

I'll tell you why...BECAUSE Political Correctness has Castrated this country!!!

Bottom line...The Biggest Racists on this Planet are Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Maxine Waters and any other African (NOT 'African American') that raises their 'Banner'.

Anyone that has to define their Nationality (American) with an adjective (if you don't know what an adjective is...just AX me)deserves to be defined by those adjectives (ALL of them) that they use.

If racism ever died, what would the racist BLACKS have left to do?

If you have watched Imus for any amount of time then you know that he says whats on his mind no matter what color, religion, creed, gender you maybe. What I don't understand is why is it wrong for him to say something like that and yet I have heard many black people refer to themselves as "nappy headed ho's and calling each other the "N" word to call each other. Personally, I find the "N" word very offensive and will not use it. Am I an African American? No I am not. I am a Native, English, Candian-French American. In my opinion blacks, latinos and others are segregating there own selves by saying they are african americans or mexican americans, aren't we all just americans? Another question I have. How can an institution such as the "United Negro College Fund" get away with such a name? Is mostly black americans who get the benefits of this institution? I believe in fairness for all people no matter your color or gender. However, I cannot the uproar we would have if we had a "United White College Fund

Brandon, the reason people look at you at your Indiana community college is because you constantly shout garbled, incoherent nonsense that disturbs the rest of the students and faculty. Oh, and did I forget to mention your incessant twitching, or the fact that you smell rancid from continuously soiling yourself? No, my brother, you are the pathetic racist who fails to realize that until 1980, 85% of this country was of European Caucasian ancestry. That's why so many institutions existed that you describe as "white." However, that was not to endure, because in the 1960s a bunch of your fellow ideologues set in motion in a series of policies designed to destroy America and its heritage. Yet you perceive that all of your failings are due to white racism, don't you? You need something to attribute them to, something that doesn't betray the fact that you're simply defective. Even 40 years from now, when whites are a tiny minority, you'll still complain that white institutional racism made you the failure you are.

I just listened (again) to IMUS apologizing for his comments...

In his apology, he says that a REVEREND said that Africans (NOT 'African Americans') REALLY BELIEVE that deep down, "We Hate Them".

Funny...But, I seem to remember African (NOT 'African Americans') POLITICIANS, that have OPENLY...(on TV and through other forms of MEDIA) made innuendo as to what should be 'DONE' to whites. Hey REV, Talk to "Squeeze Me and Fume Me."

I wonder why it is that we MAJORITY Americans seem to let that go???

decaf76384 said:

Here's the thing everyone keeps forgetting...the "nappy" point was geared toward the Black players. The "hos" comment was about the two little white girls on the team. Any one have a problem with it now?.......

John said:

As someone else in another blog stated "Rap artists have been using that language and demeaning women for years". Yet, it is only important when a white celebrity mouths it. hmmmm.

Ms. S said:

decaf76384, presents a valid point- if Imus had called a all white team
"cracker-hos", or whores/bitches- no one would have a problem with that? I think not. Let's say he was speaking about a Jewish person & made a disparging remark - again, would the world hold their tongue & accept it as a joke- I think not. As women, from all cultures & races how can we accept this remark being made against fellow women- Who by no means were presenting themselves in a negative way?
And lets be real, this country has always had all white TV, college funds restricted for the white race, and all white neighborhoods. Have we forgotten about the good ole boy network, jim crow& segregation?

Sue said:

I think Imus should be left alone, others say it, he just he is being singled out. He's very outspoken & I like that about him. I don't agree w/everything he says, but he's closer to home that most, gives me something to think about. Whatever happened to free speech? Polical correctness is killing this country, get a thicker skin and get over it.

Celeste said:

I'm more on the same page with Rob above. Black people are more racsist that any other ethnicity out there. I personally don't like this Imus guy. But I also think that his comment has been grossly taken out of context. Maybe he meant to be funny, maybe he's an idiot. Who knows! But talk about beating a dead horse.... I am sick of the racism soap box. I truly beleive that Black's who were enslaved, deserved so much more that they ever received in life. But I also beleive that does not give every Black person today in America this Grand entitlement you think you deserve. You have every God given freedom, right, and opportunity that I do, if not more so in some instances. I'm from the South, and ignorance is abundant. Like I said, I'm sick of the Racism Soapbox. If you want change, start with yourself.

In 1973, Imus had a record album called"This Honky's Nuts!" It was a take off of
Richard Prior's record."This Nigger's Crazy!"
He had a bit called "Inspired Profanity and
Creative Ethnic Slurs" Nobody said anything then, so take it for what it is..comedy...And by the way...I never heard anyone demanding Redd Fox or Richard Prior being fired..

Liz said:

People still listen to that guy? If I were Rutgers I'd be more upset with being called a whore. To be truthful the nappy part I really don't get - I googled the word and there are a bunch a websites celebrating or talking about nappy hair. But maybe I'm just naive.
Verdict: Suspension - yes Firing - no

I just think that is being used as an example and lets use it as an example to have dialogue to talk about race!

NIGGER go home, from your pent up repressive racism/hate- it came from people like u, was created from people like u and if i am so defective why use my ancestors to build this country -u european country theives native "americans"( u know the titles we must use -the adjectives), were here first u sorry individual i hope u rot and boil in hell for all of your hatred of fellow mankind

Well, he is gone, now lets see what CBS is going to do....

vijay said:

note to Imus, dont make a bad joke on air

mike said:

Giving the most racist people on the planet, jesse jackson and al sharpton, a channel to communicate through, is something that cbs should be shut down for by the fcc. how can cbs fire imus for something that is not not rascist. my ex- girlfriend, very black, if that matters, and her sisters always referred to their type of hair as nappy. they are nappy headed. nappy headed is not rascist. jesse jackson and al sharpton are nappy-headed racist. It’s not their fault that they are nappy headed but they made the decision to be racist and should not be allowed any air time through cbs media. cbs needs to stop being so wimpy and allowing racists, especially reverends who preach jesus and do not forgive from controlling them. cbs, you need to get some backbone. ever since you put on katie curic your ratings have dropped and they are going to drop some more. i advise companies all the time where my ideas make millions but big companies seem to be big and stupid. stand up and air the fact that nappy headed is no more racist than red-headed.

Alexi said:

Al Sharpton is a pompous ass. He should fall off the face of the earth. I do not see him doing any good except stirring up trouble. Imus made a comment, big deal!!! Rutgers team, toughen up. Life is going to be a lot harder out of school and if a few words like "nappy headed ho" hurts, then you should just curl up now and lock yourselves away. Maybe your mothers never told you "sticks and stones may break your bones but names will never harm you". And I'll just bet you listen to that rap crap where every black girl is a ho and made for only one thing, yet you buy that music and don't complain about it. Al Sharpton, do something about that, why don't you? And you CBS, a bunch of gutless wonders, you shouldn't have caved and fired IMUS.

Crystal Gail Magnum said:

I is deeply offended by that Imus guy (whoever he is), calling those Rutger chicks "Nappy headed hos" 'cause they obviously ain't hos. If they be real hos than they be working as strippers like me, not that anything be wrong with strippin', or goin' to bachelor parties or anything. Now, if dey want to be real hos, they can come down to Durham and hang out wit me for a few days or more.

Love, no kisses, fifty bucks, and 395 days of lies,

Crystal

Nancy said:

Many comedians use "racist humor" to puncture the air of bigotry (in all forms), by mocking the very racists they're "emulating." Richard Pryor was one, Don Rickles was another. Both of whom, in their prime, were able to play off these steroetypes to make people laugh at the absurdity of hateful words and ideas. "Blazing Saddles" used the N word more than any movie before or since and it's a prime example of how hateful comments can be turned into a very funny, very constructive lesson in the stupidy of racism. Imus' biggest crime wasn't the words or possibly even the intent... but that he forgot the number one rule of all humorists -- they're supposed to be funny.

stan said:

It's time to call a spade a spade... The Imuss flap is not gender issue.. I hope the white backlash will be swift and very distructive...

Jordan said:

I agree with Nancy, and I... uh... disagree with Stan, Duck and pretty much everyone else. Why is it when a moron like Imus makes a moronic statement, every illiterate, hood-wearing skinhead with a Swastika inked on their arm has to ramble on about double standards and how our society is going down the drain. Sure, Sharpton and Jackson are hypocrites but the irrefutable fact is this -- Imus IS a racist and lost his job because he lost his sponsors; when CBS realized they were losing fifteen million dollars a year they canned IMUS in the guise of "honor and decency." Hopefully, both sides will learn something from all of this. Words don't hurt people, but STUPIDITY does. Oh, and Stan? Imus is with one S and gender concerns matters of sex (male/female in case you're confused), not race. And fuckm_al? Next time try punctuation -- it's something you should have picked up in elementary school.
