Watercooler Chat: Michael Vick Guilty

As if this is any real surprise, Michael Vick agreed to plead guilty to federal dogfighting conspiracy charges. Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you know that Michael Vick who was a star quarterback (known for his amazing running and passing abilities) for the Atlanta Falcons was accused of participating in illegal dogfighting and, from what has come out so far in this case, of extreme cruelty to the dogs (drowning, electrocuting, strangling etc).

Vick’s plea hearing will take place Monday Aug. 27th where we’ll find out what kind of punishment he’ll receive. It could be up to 3 years in prison and a hefty fine.

The big question on many football fans minds right now is will he return to the game after his prison term. I can’t imagine how the football world and particularly the fans will allow him back, but there are those who feel adamant that he’ll be back. As reported by the US Presswire, one NFL Manager said the following:

“If he goes to prison, time will pass,” said the general manager, who spoke before news of a potential Vick plea agreement and asked not to be identified, claiming the NFL has asked current team officials not to publicly comment on the Vick case. “Months or years will pass, if he does go to jail. If he went to jail, and then left prison down the road, he’d still be relatively young, and there’d be a line of 15 to 20 teams waiting to sign him. Trust me on that. Teams are going to say, ‘F— PETA. F— the bad pub. This guy is one of the most talented players of the last 10 years. I’ll take my chances.’

“Teams may say one thing publicly. But if he gets out of jail, we’ll all be looking at Vick hard. We’re all whores in football. You know the saying. We’d sign an ax murderer if he has ability. He’ll be back. He won’t be back in Atlanta probably but he’ll be back in professional football. You can count on it.”

Watercooler Discussion: If Vick reforms after his prison term (and still has the ability to play) should he be allowed back in the League?

Vick is NOT known for "amazing passing abilities." His passing is average at best, with a completion rate in the mid-50% range. Yes he is a great runner, but overall his mediocre passing makes [made?] him a very good but not great quarterback. San Diego's decision to give him up for Tomlinson was the best they've ever made.

I don't care how much time he spends in prison. I, for one, will be looking forward to his return to the NFL. That said, the NFL should definitely let him play again. He may not be a good passer, but he is definitely one of the best football players I've ever seen in my life, even though I'm only 32. I'm not even a Falcons fan, but whenever they were on I definitely stopped to watch him in his shiny black helmet scramble around the field.

Asking if Vick should be allowed back in the league is basically asking if he should be forgiven. Nobodoy who's done anything bad has any right to ask for forgivness unless he comes totally clean with the truth first, and i'm not talking about a guilty plea and some vague apology staement read by some lawyer or agent. He would have to come onto some show like Bill O'reilly and face open questioning and give plausible answers. He couldn't pretend like Bad Newz was a different kind of dog fighting club that didn't use harmless pets (often stolen from their families)to be thrown into a pit to be killed by the fighting dogs for practice. He'd have to give a number of how many children out there might have lost there beloved pets that were stolen and forced to die a cruel and terrifying death at the hands of his ugly organization. To forgive Vick in the absense of coming clean shows either great stupidity or a hidden agenda (right NAACP???)

I say no, and not just because he is a bad person (which he is), and not just because he is a terrible role model (which he is) but because gambling is strictly forbidden for NFL players.

The NFL needs to show that they are an upstanding league and they won't tolerate criminal behavior.

After he gets out of prison, Jamie, he will have been adequately punished for his crime(s) as determined by the federal government and the state. Michael Vick's whole life does not have to be ruined just because he made a mistake. There are tons of people who have been to prison who make considerable contributions in society after they are released. Michael Vick happens to be a great athlete. I appreciate that and want to see him back on the field.

And, by the way, the NFL has all kinds of rules that are routinely broken, for example against steroid use and drug abuse. Athletes get suspended for a week or two, fined, and then are back on the field. Gambling is no different.

Besides paying his debt to society in terms of fines and a prison term, I would agree for him to be allowed back IF he got some help and showed some remorse for having those dogs killed. This is one sick individual.

I'm not perfect, nobody is. But all I hope is that if Vick is allowed to play NFL ball again that a devout PETA member somehow finds a way to exact a brutal toll of retribution on that piece of ghetto cr*p!!!

I am a huge falcons fan, first and foremost! I will NEVER support him, NEVER!!! I will get behind Joey Harrington, or Joe Schmo... BUT NEVER MIKE VICK!
He not only ruined his life, he did not care enough about his family, team or fans to not make dumb decisions. I do not blame "the poeple he hung out with" It's only about MIKE VICK.
AND, what about the people that defend him?? The people that say we should not persecute Vick, would not be defending him if he were a WHITE football player, they would have already discounted him.
I propose that all Facons fans file a civil suit for all the #7 jerseys we wasted $75 each!! I bet all those "supporters" would flip if they thought they could get money, much like his co-conspirators.

Michael Vick SHOULD NEVER BE ABLE TO RETURN AS A PROFESSIONAL. We all make choices in life, he made his. This country has simply got to stop "moving the boundary lines" to accomodate & therefore create sociopaths (i.e. people who feel the rules don't apply to them). He disgraced the NFL, his team players, his supporting fans, his family and himself. He needs to live with that and NOW be the role model he should have been by making young men THINK TWICE about their actions and ramifications. Pete Rose should give him a condolence call.

Dog Fighting is alive and thriving in this country much to the surprize of millions of Americans. (those of us who have spent years rescuing dogs in NYC alone can attest to this fact). So thank you Michael Vick for being such a low life and using your fame & fortune to bring light upon this disgraceful activity. I hope that a bit of Community Svc in addition to Prison time is in order....Dog Shelters across America could use your kennel cleaning talents. I would assign you to the Pit cages ... those poor dogs with cigarette burns on their heads, hand done tatoos inflicted, wounds on their jaws from being wired shut, imbedded and festering choke chain collars, etc. etc.etc. Clean up the mess your "homey" boys create in attempts to create a "mean dog". Then go home and try to sleep at nite. What a genuine SCHMUCK you truly are. You deserve everything you've "put out" there and back on you a thousand fold. Too bad you've not an ounce the bravery of the dogs you've brutally tortured.

THE NFL SHOULD ALLOW MICHAEL VICK TO RETURN TO PLAYING PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL. HE SHOULD BE ABLE TO HAVE THE CHANCE TO RETURN AFTER HIS JAIL TERM.
