Watercooler Chat: Give Thanks to Football

For the last (a lot of years) the NFL has traditionally featured two games on Thanksgiving. It's always a morning home game for the Detroit Lions, and an afternoon home game for the Dallas Cowboys. Everybody watches these games -- they're ingrained into Thanksgiving pageantry; large families gathered around the sofa, eyes glued to just the 'idea' of watching football. It's just what you 'do' on Thanksgiving. Because if you're not watching football on T-Giving, you have to watch one of many marathon reality shows on the myriad of cable networks.

All of these shows revolve around a celebrity in either a juxtaposed setting to their celeb persona (i.e. Hogan Knows Best -- in which a overzealous former pro-wrestler must relax and play father) or just simply a day in the life of a tabloid superhero (i.e. Keeping Up With The Kardashians -- in which Kim Kardashian 'does things' with her family). Anyway, the tradition of watching the Lions lose on Thanksgiving is a must see, but a marathon of Brett Michaels "Rock of Love" is right on its tail. Sorry Jon Kitna, I might have to forego your game next year in favor of watching random celebrity do random things for 12 straight hours. (Green Bay 37, Detroit 26) (Dallas 34, NY Jets 3)

In other news, the Arizona Cardinals lost to the putrid San Francisco 49ers. How did this happen? Well, the Cardinals had a chance to win the game on a Neil Rackers Field Goal. They kicked it, and it was... GOOD. But wait, turns out it was a delay of game. So the Cardinals had to move back 5 yards and re-kick it. And yup, this time... no good. So it's as if the Cardinals 'iced' themselves. Not sure this has ever happened before. And the 49ers went on to win it in overtime. (San Francisco 37 Arizona 31)

Hate to say it, but it looks like the Cleveland Browns (barring a terrible collapse) will make the playoffs. This is exciting, and they will surely be America's underdog. They might even win their first game before eventually getting killed by the Patriots. But hey, it's something. (Cleveland 27, Houston 17)

With that being said, Wow -- the Eagles alllllllmost beat the Patriots. It was close the entire game, and the Patriots were favored to win by over 20 points, especially considering that the Eagles were coming into the game with their 2nd string Quarterback, AJ Feeley. But Feeley played brilliantly, except when they really needed him to. The Eagles had 3 minutes to tie the game with a field goal. It was 2nd & 4, and AJ Feeley decided to hurl a down field pass to a covered Kevin Curtis. He overthrew him, and it was intercepted by Asante Samuel, which pretty much sealed the Eagles loss. But... a valiant effort by a team everyone thought would get destroyed. (New England 31, Philadelphia 28)

To conclude, one sad college football note from the weekend. You have to understand something -- The Kansas Jayhawks are an incredible college basketball program, easily one of the best, but their football program is consistently atrocious and forgettable. Well, not this year, they were undefeated up until this week, ranked #2 in the nation, and with a chance to play for THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. Talk about an underdog story. This weekend, they took on their rival, The Missouri Tigers, ranked #4 in the nation. The game was so important, it was moved to the colossal Arrowhead Stadium, Home of the Kansas City Chiefs, and broadcast on ABC in prime time. This will never happen again. Two teams from the heartland of America facing off on National Television. Well, the Jayhawks lost, but the Missouri Tigers definitely deserved to win. It was an amazing game, and featured two programs you usually never see. Just a great thing for college football.

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!

ugh...it just keeps getting worse for Miami...they lost 3-0 last night to the Steelers in the lowest scoring game EVER on Monday Night Football...and, now the Dolphins are 0-11...this is just really sad.

I was SO THRILLED by the outcome of the Mizzou game! As an alum, I jumped up and down the first three quarters and had my head under a blanket, only peeking out occasionally, during the fourth. Thanks for the shout-out!

I am really excited about the Browns. My parents had season tickets when I was a child in the 80s and early 90s, and I loved going to games. It' still not quite the same with the new incarnation of the team, but it is great to have them doing well again (finally).

Oh, and as an Ohio State alum, I have to say, Go Pitt and Go Oklahoma this weekend! We may end up making it to the BCS championship game again this season afterall...you never know.
