Watercooler Chat: BCS Championship decided, Pats still the top and Dolphins still the Bottom
The final BCS Standings were announced last night. And in a predictable controversy, LSU will play the Ohio State Buckeyes for the National Championship. Here's why this frustrates fans. Going into Saturday, everything was prepped for a Missouri v. West Virginia BCS Championship. A battle between two great, yet smaller football programs. This might not have yielded the highest ratings, but it would have been a great game, and the BCS couldn't do anything to prevent this match-up because... well, they earned it. However, when they lost, it basically allowed the BCS committee to make a judgment call. And of course they chose two large, well-known (and ratings friendly) teams to play for the trophy. Okay -- but at this point, what does the regular season matter if you're just going to pick teams you think people will watch at the end of the season? Why Ohio State, who plays in a sub-par conference? Why not Kansas (1 loss), or Oklahoma (won the Big 12 championship), or even Hawaii (12-0)? It's just so arbitrary. Many arguments have been made on this topic, so I won't give you another. It's just such a shame for the fan.
Anyway, onto to some NFL highlights, where, and get this, they have a playoff structure to decide the champion. Although this year, they could probably end the season by saying, "Okay, New England is the best, we're not gonna go through with the playoffs this year. It's just wayyyyy too cold" -- and people would probably be alright with that.
And, when you mention the so far perfect season of the Patriots, you just can't help but think of the 1972 Dolphins (who hold the record for having the only undefeated season in NFL history). And, when you think of these two teams, you just can't help but think how ironic it is that not only is the '72 Dolphins only perfect season in NFL history in jeopardy, but the 2007/2008 Dolphins are also in the running to be the only team in NFL history to not win a game during their 16 week season.
Don't look now, but it seems the Minnesota Vikings are for real. They looked abysmal at the beginning of the season, but now... they look really really good. Like tight good. They have the immortal Adrian Peterson, but they also have Chester Taylor (their other RB who's playing out of his mind), giving them the option to confuse defenses. An option that the New Orleans Saints thought they'd have this year with Reggie Bush and Deuce McCalister. Nope. Anyway, it's extremely possible that the Vikings could sneak into the playoffs. And if they do, getting to the Super Bowl is not totally unreasonable. You need to be able to run the football in the playoffs, and NO ONE can stop their running game. (Minnesota 42, Detroit 10)
Over in Oakland, this year's #1 draft pick, JaMarcus Russell, finally played. He held out for a BIG contract during the pre-season, didn't attend camp to learn the play book, and was thus unable to help the team in anyway. But yesterday, the coach gave him a little playing time, and he completed his very first pass of his NFL career, throwing for combined 56 yards. Isn't that nice? (Oakland 34, Denver 20)
And this past Thursday night -- the ultimate showdown. The top 2 teams in the NFC battling it out. A possible preview of the NFC Championship. And every single one of the 92 people who own the NFL Network truly enjoyed it. (Dallas 37, Green Bay 27).

It really is a complicated process on how they choose who plays in what bowl.
