Watercooler Chat: Pats eclipse Dolphins 14-0 record
Well, it happened, the Patriots eclipsed the 1972 Miami Dolphins record of 14-0, as they beat the 2007 Miami Dolphins, and moved to... 15-0. Every season, players from that '72 Dophins squad literally break out the champagne whenever the current team threatening their perfect season loses. Well, this year, those boys so far had nothing to drink about. Of course, any real Dolphin fan doesn't just see the Pats as beating the 14-0 record....they contend (very vocally) that the Pats have to have an undefeated record for the entire season (which means a 16-0 regular season, undefeated in Playoffs and winning the Super Bowl). And, if all that happens (which is unlikely but possible) die-hard Dolphin fans will point to the asterisk next to the Patriots in many newspapers around the country that says "caught cheating" (remember a few months ago when the Pats coaching staff was caught trying to steal the NY Jets signals...something, by the way, every NFL team does) as their vindication that the Dolphins are still the only true undefeated champs. (New England 28, Miami 7).
The Eagles, officially elimnated from the playoffs, have been playing amazing football. They beat the Cowboys last week, and they trampled all over the Saints this week. Donovan McNabb is truly putting on a show out there. It's as if he's telling the Eagles organization, "Hey... I'm awesome! Didn't you know that?! Why is everyone giving me such a hard time?" It's just a bummer these guys won't be playing in the post season. Would any current playoff team feel comfortable playing them in the first round? Doubtful. (Philadelphia 38, New Orleans 23).
The underdog Cleveland Browns, the ones that everybody says could do some serious damage in the playoffs with their explosive offense............. played horrible yesterday losing to the abysmal Cincinnati Bengals. Now they no longer control their playoff destiny. Before, it was 'win and they're in'. Now, they have to beat the 49ers next week, AND hope that the Tennessee Titans lose to the Colts. And the Colts might rest players for the playoffs, allowing for the Titans to eek out a win. It would be a bummer if the Browns didn't make the playoffs. That would be good for the city, and make for a possible upset in the first round of the playoffs. (Cincinnati 19, Cleveland 14)
In a similar case, the Washington Redskins look like a new team with QB Todd Collins at the helm. When Jason Collins was playing QB, they looked slow and stagnant, but Collins gives them a much more high-energy and potent offense. This team could actually make the playoffs, and would be an extremely frightening opponent for the Seattle Seahawks in the first round. The Redskins could seriously pull an upset the way they're playing. Very exciting! (Washington 32, Minnesota 21).
And the most scary news of week's past, Terrell Owens ankle. He should be okay for the playoffs, but will he be 100%? Now, all the sudden, other NFC playoff contenders -- the Packers, Giants, Seahawks, Buccaneers (and maybe the Wild Card Contenders, the Redskins and Vikings) are all thinking, "We can beat these guys". Owens is absolutely crucial to their success. He's been playing out of his mind this season. And now, the Cowboys are playing with dented armor. Suddenly, things seem up for grabs. (Dallas 20, Carolina 13).
