Watching and Enjoying the Super Bowl!
Throwing a memorable football party requires some careful planning. It’s important to try and accommodate all types of fanmarthastewart.jpgs (from the fanatic to the passive and from the beer bellied to the health nut). If you follow these simple rules, you’ll be the “Martha Stewart” of football parties in no time at all.
The Room
It is important to remember that not everyone at your party is a true football fan. So, you will need to set aside an area tom-petty.jpgfor talking and an area for serious football watching.
Go all out on decorations, no such thing as too much! Check out factorycard.com for all things Super Bowl XLII.
Make sure you have comfortable couches and sitting areas. This is the one football game where (other than to eat and go to the bathroom) you won’t want to get up for three-plus hours. You don’t want to miss the football, the commercials or the halftime show – it’s Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers this year.
Even if you don’t know or don’t like their music, there’s always that off chance we’ll see some kind of wardrobe malfunction…although not sure a Tom Petty wardrobe malfunction is quite as interesting as Janet Jackson’s.
Food
If you’re on the East Coast, the Super Bowl starts at 6 p.m., so make sure you have more substantial fare or at least the number to the local pizza delivery place.
Place crunchy snacks away from the TV. There’s nothing worse than hearing someone crunch carrots and celery in your ear while you’re trying to listen to the commentators.
Serve food in abundance, but keep it simple. Remember you’re not catering for an intimate dinner party. This is football — everything is big and bountiful.
Entertainment
Obviously the guests come to watch the football game…and to socialize, but if the game turns into a route (which is more common than we’d like to think), then you just have to rely on socializing for entertainment. You might want to hedge your bets and spice up the party by starting a football party. There are many different types of football pools, but if you want an easy one, click here for an easy example.
Commercial Breaks
The commercials can sometimes be more exciting than the game, so have a TV in the bathroom. Even if you wait for a timeout to go to the bathroom, you won’t want to miss the $2-to-$3 million-30 second commercials.
Beware
Beware of the guest that shows up in the third quarter and is clearly not interested in the game. He or she is only interested in the party — not the game — and may stay at your house way too long. If this is the case, the end of the game should be the queue for your kids to start throwing a tantrum, or if you don’t have kids, perhaps enter into a heated and uncomfortable argument (try talking politics and make sure to take whatever side your guest is not on).
Enjoy!!!!
