WATERCOOLER CHAT: LAKERS SURVIVE AND TIGER ROARS

On Father's Day weekend, the Celtics were unable to wrap a championship trophy for their dads.  The Lakers, however, ensured that THEIR dads would get to watch their sons play at least one more finals game this season.  Now the details:

On Thursday night, the Lakers made history -- putting on the best collapse in NBA Finals history.  After dominating the entire half, the Lakers led by 20 POINTS heading into halftime.  It looked like a surefire win for the Lakers, but nobody could have predicted what happened.    Slowly, led by long-time-Celtic Paul Pierce, the Celtics clawed back, and finally took the lead towards the end of the fourth quarter.   And after that, there was no hope for the Lakers.  The Celtics Ray Allen capped off the game with a beautiful, in-yo-face isolation drive against Sasha Vujacic (meaning he called a play in which it would just be him against Sasha... one-on-one.)  It was simultaneously the greatest comeback and pathetic meltdown in Finals history.  Fascinating.  Unbelievable.  Boston 97, Los Angeles 91.

But, on Sunday, with their season on the line, the Lakers jumped out to an early game lead.  However, (and perhaps as predicted) the Celtics came back AGAIN, trailing by only 3 points at the half.  It was neck and neck up until the last 1.5 minutes, when Kobe Bryant stripped the ball from Paul Pierce on a vital possession, and slammed it home in front of his hometown crowd (who went nuts by the way).  The Lakers hung on, and took Game 5, 103-98.  The series heads back to Boston on Tuesday.  How can you not watch this?

In other news, Tiger Woods played brilliantly in the US Open, but it all came down to just one 12-ft-putt.  Nearly impossible for the average golfer (especially in front of a huge crown and millions on the line)... but for Tiger?  Well, he sunk the putt, the crowd erupted, and now he will have a one-on-one 18 hole showdown with Rocco Mediate on Monday (ESPN).  For the common sports spectator, golf is not a viewing option (lack of drama).   But Monday will definitely be a heated contest, and the drama will be in full bloom.
