WATERCOOLER CHAT: THE BEST WIMBLEDON EVER!!!
Even though there were no major playoffs or drafts this week, the world of sports did not disappoint...and, I'm
not talking about the whole A Rod, Madonna craziness (although you
really have to give Madge some credit for always staying relevant and
in the news). No, I'm talking about perhaps the Greatest Tennis Match
ever played. Sunday's Wimbledon final featured the favorite, Roger
Federer, who currently has a winning streak of 5 straight Wimbledon titles. He entered the tourney as a No. 1 seed, with Rafael Nadal at the No. 2 spot. The match lasted almost 7 hours
(with a rain delay) and finally, after four hours and 48 minutes of
actual play, Nadal came out victorious with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-7
(8), 9-7 win that marks the longest Men's final in Wimbledon History.
Rafael Nadal was notorious. Nadal had lost to Federer in the last two
Wimbleton finals, and his win halted Federer's Wimbledon win streak at
5. It was simply an amazing duel. If you can, take a look up the
highlights on YouTube.
In other news, we are in the final stages of the Olympic qualifiers.
And while this may not be as ceremonial of an attraction as the
Olympics, it certainly has the exact same intense drama as the main
event. Think about it, during the Olympics, you always hear stories
about a certain athlete training their whole life for the Olympic
games. And how tonight is "what it's all about" However, how would it
feel if you trained your whole life for the Olympics, and then didn't
even get a chance to compete. Well, that's what the qualifiers are all
about. Fail here, and you don't even get a chance to win at the
legendary event. Some athletes were even diving at the finish line,
hoping to win by a nose. Tyson Gay, one of the best runners for the
U.S., tumbled after pulling a muscle in the 200m qualifiers. This guy
won this event at the World Championships last year, and because he
fell, he won't be competing in his best event come the Olympics. This
just goes to show you the true difficulty, hardship, and unlucky breaks
that come with making it to the Olympics.
And, now the news you've all been waiting for, yes, Joey Chestnut reclaimed his thrown by beating rival Takeru Kobayashi in overtime (and, in high definition, although please explain to me why we need to see hot dog eating
in high def) at the July 4th Hot Dog Eating Contest at the famed
Nathans in Coney Island. Chestnut won the coveted mustard yellow belt.
In case you missed it, the twowill go mono a mono again Sept. 28 at the Krystal Square Off World Hamburger Eating
Championship in Chattanooga, Tenn.
